The SMP numbers behind the planning estimate

For eligible employees, Statutory Maternity Pay is normally 90% of average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks, then £194.32 a week or 90% of average weekly earnings if lower for up to another 33 weeks. The 2026/27 earnings threshold used for SMP is £129 a week.

Always confirm entitlement and exact payroll figures with your employer and current GOV.UK guidance.

More than an SMP calculator

A traditional Statutory Maternity Pay calculator tells you roughly what maternity pay may be. Bump & Balance then asks the question most families actually need answered: what happens when that lower income meets your real monthly life?

Add your normal take-home pay, employer maternity package, partner contribution, household spending and savings to see the wider picture.

See the savings gap before leave starts

Your plan estimates the periods where household income may fall below your planned spending and turns that into an overall maternity pot and monthly savings target.

You can then test shorter leave, longer leave or a temporary lifestyle reduction without rebuilding everything.

Month-by-month maternity leave view

Maternity pay can change during a calendar month. The planner models the leave day by day and groups it into a month-by-month view so changes in enhanced, statutory and unpaid periods are easier to understand.

Private partner contributions

Couples do not need to share every salary, debt or personal outgoing. A partner can complete their side privately and only the amount available to the household plan is used.

Common questions

Maternity money planning, in plain English

What does a maternity pay calculator work out?

A maternity pay calculator can estimate how income changes during maternity leave. Bump & Balance also combines that estimate with household spending, baby costs, savings and your intended leave length.

Is maternity leave the same as maternity pay?

No. Maternity leave is the time away from work; maternity pay is the income you may receive during part of that leave. The two can have different lengths, which is why planning unpaid weeks matters.

Can I add enhanced maternity pay from my employer?

Yes. You can model an employer maternity package in stages before statutory or unpaid periods begin.

What if I am self-employed?

The planner includes a self-employed route and lets you model Maternity Allowance rather than treating every user as eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay.

Is this a payroll calculation?

No. Bump & Balance is a budgeting and planning estimate. Actual entitlement and payslip values depend on your circumstances, employer policy and current UK rules.
