Plan the full leave, not just the first payslip
The financial pressure often changes as maternity pay moves through employer-enhanced, statutory and unpaid stages. Your plan follows those changes through to your expected return to work.
Use the life you have now as the starting point
Mortgage or rent, food, cars and bills matter — but so do holidays, takeaways, hobbies and the spending that makes life feel normal. The planner lets you decide what you actually want to protect.
Add the cost of baby
Include upfront purchases and expected monthly baby costs. If you already own something, mark it as already covered rather than inflating your target.
Turn the gap into a target
Instead of just showing a scary shortfall, Bump & Balance estimates how much you may want available when leave begins and what that means as a monthly saving between now and then.
Common questions
Maternity money planning, in plain English
How long can maternity leave last in the UK?
Statutory Maternity Leave can usually last up to 52 weeks for eligible employees. Your pay may not continue for that full period, so the planner separates leave length from paid weeks.
Can I compare 6 months, 9 months and 12 months?
Yes. The planner is designed to make different leave lengths easy to compare so you can see the financial effect before deciding what feels realistic.
Can my partner be included without sharing all their finances?
Yes. Your partner can complete a private contribution flow so their salary and itemised personal commitments do not need to appear in your shared plan.
Does the calculator include baby costs?
Yes. You can add one-off items such as a pram or cot and ongoing costs such as nappies, feeding and clothing.
